IN HIS OWN WORDS: A CONVERSATION WITH WALLACE

Before connecting with the Mosaic Center, I was working part-time and earning minimum wage. I wanted a more stable opportunity, but the job-search world had completely changed. Everything was online, emails mattered, and digital resumes were required. I was used to working with my hands and talking to people face-to-face. I was at the point where I was just lost in this world of technology.

Everybody else was giving me direction, but they weren't following through and actually showing me how to do it. With my coach, Jeffrey, he gave me direction and he followed through. He helped me learn how to use the computer, submit applications, and send emails. His patience made me want to learn. Instead of feeling lost, I began to feel capable.

The turning point was getting the call from IU Health for an interview. After past experiences where programs or promises didn’t always come through, that moment felt different. At that point, I knew what I was being told—the help that I would receive—I was actually receiving. It built a lot of trust.

I keep the elevators, stairwells, and main spaces clean and sanitized. I bring a real sense of purpose to it every day because I understand how much a safe environment matters in healthcare. Sanitation in the hospital is very important. Without sanitation, you can’t heal.

My financial coach, LaKenia, helped me with budgeting and credit-building so I could enter a homeownership pathway with INHP. Because of that, I moved into a brand-new home. It is the first house I have ever worked toward entirely on my own. It’s big, just to know that this is a property of yours. The Mosaic Center has taken me from 0.0 to where I feel like I am continuing to move forward.

"Know that help is available. Find the Mosaic Center, or find someplace like it. If you put your effort into it, and put your heart into it, you can accomplish it. You do not have to know everything before you begin. You just need a place to start."
